For the medieval mystical culture, the Christian soul meets God in a "cloud of unknowing," a divine darkness of lack of knowledge. This assembly with God is past all realizing and past all experiencing. Mysticisms of the fashionable interval, to the contrary, position "mystical adventure" on the heart, and modern readers tend to misunderstand the medieval culture in "experientialist" phrases.
After volumes quite often introductory, Dr Needham now embarks upon his systematic examine of the improvement of the common sciences in China. The Sciences of the Earth stick with: geography and cartography, geology, seismology and mineralogy. They are labels for behavior and thought patterns, and as such, are expressions of the ego. Nonduality, and enlightenment, is not about the ego. Nonduality and enlightenment is about identity, however. The ego attempts to bind your sense of identity, of self, to an artificial construct that is taken to be separate and unique from the rest of reality. Genuine identity is all-inclusive in that it recognizes the true nature of the self as identical with all of reality as a whole. Ego-based consciousness and identity is therefore a sense of a separate and unique self that is conceptualized and experienced as being somehow fundamentally distinct from everything and everyone else.
As environmental and climate conditions worsen and economic divides become even more grossly distorted, the need for clarity and living in reality will only increase. We can either collectively live in the truth that All, indeed, is One, or we can suffer the results of our individual and collective delusions. The greatest tool that humans have at their disposal in facing this challenge is entheogens. It’s a simple fact that is, unfortunately, complicated by misguided laws. It is time, however, for things to change, simply because they must.
In other cases, use is clear, such as with South American ayahuasca shamanism or Meso-American use of psilocybin mushrooms. While there are potential connections between entheogens and historically nondual or mystical religious traditions, in many cases we can find more clear connections to shamanic traditions, which are often more of a dualistic nature and may or may not involve emphasis on nondual states of awareness and being. Full understanding of the relationship between entheogens and nonduality is therefore largely a modern phenomenon and much of our understanding of such connections historically is speculative and inconclusive.
