Example text

What is algebra? Algebra is the representation of quantities and relationships using symbols. More simply, algebra uses letters to hold the place of numbers. That does not sound so bad. Why do we use these letters? Why not just use numbers? Because in some situations, we do not always have all the numbers we need. Let’s say you have 2 apples and you buy 3 more. You now have 5 apples, and we can show that addition by writing the sentence 2 + 3 = 5. All of the values in the sentence are numbers, so it is easy to see how you went from 2 apples to 5 apples.

This is why x is called a variable! Example What is –5p + 9 when p = –1? Replace p with –1: –5(–1) + 9. Remember the order of operations: Multiply before adding. –5(–1) = 5, 5 + 9 = 14. When p = –1, –5p + 9 is equal to 14. Example What is 4(c2 – 7) when c = –3? qxd:JSB 50 12/18/08 11:45 AM Page 50 algebra basics Replace c with –3: 4((–3)2 – 7). (–3)2 – 7 is in parentheses, and since exponents come before subtraction, begin there. (–3)2 = 9, 9 – 7 = 2. Finally, 4(2) = 8. Practice 2 1. What is –9z when z = 9?

2. n and 19n have the same base (n) and the same exponent (1), so n can be added to 19n. 3. 8x–3 and –8x3 have the same base (x), but different exponents; 3 and –3 are not the same exponent, so 8x–3 and –8x3 cannot be combined. 4. –11y2 and –15z2 have the same exponent (2) but different bases, so –11y2 and –15z2 cannot be combined. 5. a5b4c2 and –2a5b4c2 have the same bases (a, b, and c) and the same exponents for each base (5 for a, 4 for b, and 2 for c), so a5b4c2 and –2a5b4c2 can be combined.
