In the words of one nineteenth-century AfricanAmerican woman: Many think, because your skins are tinged with a sable hue, that you are an inferior race of beings; but God does not consider you as such.
For example, Robert Coles (1990) talked with African-American children from newly desegregated schools in the South. As they talked and drew pictures about God, the sense of self-worth, comfort, and hope children had from their religious beliefs was clear. For example, an African-American girl with difficulties at school said, “I keep my mouth shut here in school. . , teachers are] blind when it comes to us” (p. 176).
